How it Works
Forum Theatre is a stylistic performance in which the audience is the primary driver of the action. The audience is referred to as Spect-actors.  Actors act out a situation or event that is current in the political, social, or environmental world of the region the performance takes place in. There is an outside narrator that is used to mediate the whole structure of the performance. At a point where the plot requires a choice to be made the narrator will freeze the actors and then invite Spect-actors into the action. After this point, the performance can take on any form and the action is completely out of the main actors hands and fully in those of the Spect-actors.

Interior hallway, in front of the doors to the girl’s locker room.
[The class is over and the girls make their way to the locker room.  GRACE and LUCY stop TORI from entering.]
GRACE:  Whoa.  Where do you think you’re going?
TORI:  What?
GRACE:  You heard me dyke.  What are you playing at?
TORI:  I just want to change clothes.
LUCY:  You’re going to have to wait until we’re done, pervert.
GRACE:  No queers allowed.
TORI:  But …
LUCY:  You want to be some kind of sexual deviant, you’re not getting anywhere near me naked.
[Action freezes.]
NARRATOR:  CNN recently reported that on a 2010 Department of Defense Comprehensive Review Survey of Uniformed Active Duty and Reserve Service Members, a question read "If 'don't ask, don't tell' is repealed and you are assigned to bathroom facilities (that have) an open bay shower that someone you believe to be a gay or lesbian service member also used, which are you most likely to do?"  Though most soldiers expressed a willingness to accept openly gay service members, law makers are still not convinced.
[Action continues.]
GRACE:  She’d probably ogle us in the shower.
LUCY:  I bet that would make her day.  Wouldn’t it dyke?
TORI:  No, I just want …
LUCY:  We all know what you want?  We saw you getting it from Lily Ward last night.
GRACE:  Disgusting.  Walking around in public like it’s okay.
TORI:  Leave me alone.
GRACE:  Gladly.  You stay out here – alone – and we’ll be in there changing without becoming one of your queermo fantasies.
LUCY:  We shouldn’t have to suffer just because you choose to be a freak.
[Action freezes.]
NARRATOR: A recent study done at Chico State gauged the symptoms of depression and psychological distress of different groups. The study found that the increase of distress was directly related to discrimination and hazing. The cut-off score is 16, with anything above that being symptomatic of depression.  Straight white males averaged a score of 10 Straight White women score 10 as well. Ethnic minorities made a large jump up to 19 and the Gay/Lesbian/ Transsexual communities had the largest amount of psychological distress scoring 21.
[Tori reaches for the door.]
GRACE:  Fuck off, dyke!
[Grace shoves Tori away.]
TORI:  Hey!
LUCY:  Are you trying to get your ass kicked?
GRACE:  Seriously, what’s your problem?
LUCY:  Where to begin.
GRACE:  You think anyone will blame us?
LUCY:  We have a right to defend ourselves from perverts like you.
TORI:  Cut it out!
GRACE:  Get lost!
TORI:  I need to get my things.
LUCY:  Tough shit!
[Pushes Tori further.]
TORI:  Don’t touch me!
[Grace and Lucy approach Tori.  Freeze.]
NARRATOR: What would you do to solve this situation? I invite an audience member or two to come up and intervene in any way they want.  Make a choice. (Throughout the audience interaction the actors will improvise.  The narrator can choose to stop the action at any point and invite other participants in)
